Cubeb pepper comes from Indonesia. It is characterised by dry woody, camphor-like and menthol aromas. The aroma is reminiscent of lavender. Only grind shortly before use! Also known as Javanese pepper, this spice is ideal for meat and vegetable dishes.
Kubeben contains up to 20% of an essential oil (Oleum Cubebae). It contains various sesquiterpenes such as alpha and beta cubebeans, cadins, copaen, cubebol and humules. The drug also contains Apiol, Asarone, Cineol, Pinene, Sabinen and Safrol. In addition, there are lignans (including cubebin and cubeninine), cubebenic acid, resin and fatty oil.
The taste is aromatic, pungent bitter, but not burning.
In high doses, cubeb pepper can irritate the urinary tract and cause headaches.
