Coriander originated in the Near East, but quickly spread throughout the Mediterranean. In the tombs of the pharaohs coriander seeds were found, the Greeks and Romans seasoned wine with coriander. The Romans brought coriander to Central Europe.

The seeds and leaves are components of curry mixtures. It can also be used to season bread. Coriander is very often combined with cumin, also known as cumin.
