Nespera / Brazilian Apricot

The evergreen tree of the Nespera / Brazilian apricot is classified botanically as a member of the rose family. The medlar, in Portuguese Nespera, also called Japanese medlar or mistletoe, is a pome fruit plant.

Our varieties cultivated here in Portugal have their origin in Asia and belong to the Loquat family, a Brazilian apricot.

The round to egg-shaped fruits themselves are ripe in spring from April to May, depending on the weather conditions. The fruits, 4 to 8 cm in diameter, are ready to eat when brown dots form on the yellow skin. The thin, slightly hairy skin of the fruit can be eaten or easily peeled off as it leaves a slightly bitter aftertaste on the tongue.  The firm, yellow to orange flesh is juicy and refreshing, sweet-sour with a citrus-orange note and very aromatic. A beautiful ornamental plant can be grown from the medium-sized fruit kernels.

The fruits of Nespera contain a lot of potassium, vitamin A and strengthen the immune system. The diuretic effect of the fruit helps in detoxification and can also be well applied in the diet.

For breakfast, cut into small pieces in yoghurt or muesli - a real enrichment to your diet.
