Sodium bicarbonate is a special sodium salt of carbonic acid that is completely safe for people and the environment and can be used without any side effects.

Sodium hydrogen carbonate (common name: baking soda) has the molecular formula NaHCO3, is a sodium salt of carbonic acid and is one of the hydrogen carbonates. The compound should not be confused with sodium carbonate (soda, molecular formula Na2CO3). The outdated and chemically incorrect common names bicarbonate of soda and sodium bicarbonate are occasionally used for sodium hydrogen carbonate. The compound is also sold commercially under the names baking soda, baking soda, baking soda and brand names.
