Oregano as a spice came to Germany with Italian pizza.
Oregano is also known as wild marjoram. The epitome of Mediterranean cuisine. You immediately think of pizza or tomato sauce. Oregano is rich in essential oils, i.e. flavors and fragrances. Its scent alone is appetizing. Oregano is indispensable in tomato sauces, on toasted bread with olive oil and garlic, in vegetable dishes with eggplant, tomatoes, cucumbers or peppers or in Mediterranean vegetable stews. Oregano is particularly delicious in marinades for grilled meat and fish, in salads, with fried potatoes, in meatballs, braised dishes and spicy soups.
