Botany of almonds
Prunus dulcis var. Dulcis.
Almond trees occasionally carry bitter almonds, which are hardly distinguishable externally from sweet almonds.
This natural proportion is about two percent and is completely harmless to health.
The commercially available bitter almonds, however, are a subspecies with the Latin name Prunus amygdalus amara.
